Major incidents that Bangladesh saw in 2018

DHAKA: 2018, a year starting on Tuesday of the Gregorian calendar, the 2018th year of  the year of national election for Bangladesh, the year of entering aerospace by launching Bangabandhu Satellite-1 .

It was an eventful year for Bangladesh. The 11th parliamentary election was held at the last part of the year. Awami League-led alliance clinched landslide victory amid stray incidents of violence that claimed eighteen people’s lives.

Besides, plane crash, road accidents, stampede, landslide and many other forms of accidents killed many while 49 people were killed in US-Bangla plane crash at the first end of the year.

January 6: 10 Bangladeshis killed in Saudi road accident

At least 10 Bangladeshis were killed while ten others injured in a road crash at Jizan province of Saudi Arabia.

The accident occurred when a vehicle hit the truck, carrying 20 Bangladeshis to their workplace, from behind, said Bangladesh Embassy in Riyadh.

February 26: 9 killed as bus hits lorry in N’ganj

At least eight people were killed and 30 others injured after a long-haul bus crashed into a lorry on the Dhaka-Chittagong highway in Sonargaon of Narayanganj.

March 12: 51 killed in US-Bangla plane crash death 

At least 51 people were killed as US-Bangla aircraft crashed at Tribhuvan International Airport in Kathmandu.

Of the deaths, 26 were Bangladeshi, 22 Nepalis, 1 Chinese and 1 Maldivian. 

March 18: 5 killed in Sylhet gas pipe fire after lightning 

Five people were killed in a fire originated from a gas line blast following a lightning strike in Golapganj upazila in Sylhet.

April 1: 8 killed in Gopalganj bus plunge

Eight passengers were killed and 26 injured after a bus of “Sugandha Paribahan” falls into a ditch beside Dhaka-Barisal highway in Muksudpur upazila of Gopalganj 

April 13: 7 Bangladeshi workers killed in Saudi fire

Nine people, including seven Bangladeshis, were killed as a devastating fire at a residential building in Riyadh, said sources at Bangladesh embassy in Riyadh.

The incident took place at the building, a dormitory for workers, near Riyadh when a gas cylinder exploded following an electric short circuit.   

May 14: Nine killed in Chattogram stampede

Nine women were killed and 25 others injured in a stampede when over 30,000 people gathered to collect zakat and essentials provided by an industrial group at a village in Satkania of Chittagong.

June 16: 4 kids killed in Gazipur boat capsize

Four children, including three girls, were killed as a boat carrying them capsized in a beel (water body) in Bymile area of Gazipur city.

They were having a boat ride to celebrate Eid-ul-Fitr when the boat capsized into deep water at one stage.

July 25: 5 children buried alive in Cox's Bazar landslides

Five children, including four siblings, were killed in landslides triggered by torrential rain in Cox's Bazar.

A huge chunk of mud from a nearby hill fell on the house of Jamal Uddin, a Malaysia expatriate, and buried his four children alive when they were asleep at Bachamiar Ghona in the town.

August 20: 11 killed in Narsingdi road crash 

Eleven people were killed after a head-on collision between a bus and a human haulier on Dhaka-Sylhet Highway in Belabo upazila of Narsingdi.

A Dhaka-bound bus from Bhairab collided with the three-wheeler, leaving eight people dead on the spot and 11 others critically injured.

October 18: 5 killed as train hits human hauler in Rajbari

At least five people died and nine others were wounded as a train hit a three-wheeler, locally known as Nosimon, while the vehicle was passing through Solakura level crossing in Baliakandi area in Rajbari.

October 26: 10 killed as bus-truck collide in Panchagarh

Ten people, including two women and two children, were killed and 15 others injured when a bus collided head-on with a goods-laden truck at Dashmile Bazar in Sadar upazila of Panchagarh.

November 7: All 8 of a family killed in Joypurhat fire 

A fire killed all eight of a family, including four children, in Joypurhat town. The fire broke out in a three-room house of Dulal at Aramnagar area.

December 12: 11 killed in Gopalganj road crash 

At least 12 people, including four of a family, were killed and 20 others injured when a bus and a human hauler collided head-on in Sadar upazila of Gopalganj.
