Political conflict affects country

NEW YORK: Bangladesh made tremendous success in economy and development though political gridlock keeps shadow in the achievement, Nobel Laureate Dr Muhammad Yunus asserted.

The eminent economist made the comment while addressing a reception event organized by New York’s Probashi Nagorik Committee on Tuesday night honoring Yunus for Congressional Gold Medal award and the Presidential Medal of Freedom, the highest civilian honor by USA.

Terming the country as a role model to the developing world, he said, “Bangladesh achieved MDG (Millennium Development Goal) within 2013 instead of 2015, scheduled duration by UN. We have to set the target to eradicate poverty, unemployment and corruptions by 2030 with young generation’s endeavor.”

Yunus criticized ongoing political stalemate over election and nationwide tensions and said “Political parties know about election mechanism but they locked into brawl on the issue which is utterly detrimental for constant development.”

He also criticized government’s recent repressive attitudes to noble laureate institution Grameen Bank.

Dr Showkat Ali was presided over the reception programe.
