TK 923 crore ÔÇÿblack moneyÔÇÖ whitened last fiscal: NBR

Revenue target crossed to Tk 62,747 crore

DHAKA: A total of 1,923 moneyed men washed white their TK 923 crore ‘black money’ in the just-past fiscal year, according to official disclosure made Tuesday.

Dr Nasir Uddin Ahmed, Chairman of the National Board of Revenue (NBR), at a press conference at its Kakrail office auditorium announced the outcome of government’s budgetary measure meant for roping in the holders of untaxed money for investing in productive sector.     

Ahmed said, “A total of Tk 922.98 crore of undisclosed money was whitened through making certain permitted investments in the last fiscal and Tk 121.21 crore was realised as tax on the hitherto untaxed money.”

The highest amount of money was whitened through investing in the capital market, as 296 individuals invested a sum of Tk 426.67 crore, he added.

The press conference was told that the highest 1,320 persons invested Tk 28.91 crore in buying flats or floor spaces.

Besides, Tk 239 crore was invested in establishing new structures as well as businesses while Tk 257 crore.28 crore in refurbishing or expanding old businesses by 162 and 145 investors respectively.

The chairman also said the last fiscal year the NBR collected Tk 62,747 crore in revenue against a target of Tk 61,000 crore. In 2008-09, only Tk 52,527 crore had been netted from the taxpayers.
