DHAKA: Bangladesh Bank Governor Dr Atiur Rahman on Thursday termed the country’s private banks as Zamindar (land lord).
The central bank boss came up with the observation while addressing the Youth Leadership Summit 2014 as the chief guest at Bangabandhu International Conference Centre in the city.
Atiur said, “I am telling the new landlords (the private banks). Do something for the society, let spend some portion of their profit because these banks have been built up with the money of the society’s day laboring people.”
Targeting the guests of the function, the governor said, “You, the guest, have idea how much salary I draw while the chief executive officers of the private banks get 40-time more salary than that of mine.”
He added: “But they get that salary from money deposited by the society’s day laboring people.”
Bangladesh Youth Leadership Center hosted the three-day international event.
