Cabinet proposes int’l call charge reduction

DHAKA: The cabinet on Monday proposed to reduce international call charges to stop illegal VoIP (Voice over Internet Protocol).

Information Minister Hasanul Haque Inu placed the proposal in the cabinet chaired by Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina at the secretariat in the noon.

Confirming the matter, a cabinet member, who attended the meeting, told banglanews that the cabinet discussed ways of International Incoming Call Termination Rate reduction.

The information minister told the cabinet that the government is now taking three cents from each international call.

He expressed hope that if the rate can be set to 1.5 cents people would be interested to talk in legal ways.

Sources said at least five crore minutes of international calls are made from Bangladesh everyday.

Among them, one crore are made by VoIP, they added.
