CHITTAGONG: Port city’s business community went for fair-price sale of essentials on their own, to give some relief to the citizens from market upturns in the month of Ramadan.

Chittagong Metropolitan Chamber of Commerce and Industry sponsored the rationing from six points in the city Saturday.

The selling operation started on mobile trucks at Kotwali Crossing, Oxygen Crossing, Bohoddar Hat, Sholoshohor Gate No. 2, Chawkbazar and Agrabad in front of chamber`s office.

Abdus Salam, President of the trade body, said, "We have begun the sales programme to prevent the price hike of the daily necessaries and supply the commodities to common people at fair price."

They hoped that it would have a positive impact on the market.

At the sales centres of the chamber, rice is being sold at Tk 25, gram Tk 38, bean Tk 20, sugar Tk 45, soybean oil Tk 83 per litre, Tk 60 per two litres and Tk 400 per five-litre can.

One buyer can buy five-kg rice and oil maximum and other essentials weighing two KGs.

AHMS Shamsul Muktadir, Chief Executive of the Chamber, said they got “significant response” from the buyers, especially for rice and oil.

Besides, Chittagong Chamber of Commerce and Industry, the apex organization of the businessmen of Chittagong, would sell the essentials at fair price at city`s 31 points.
