DHAKA: Over 60 percent of the loans disbursed by the banks in the country have been taken by multimillionaires.
The number of borrowers from banks who took over one-crore taka is six thousand higher than the number of listed millionaires.
Those who took over one-crore-taka loan from the banks borrowed over Tk 44,000 crore more than those listed millionaires who deposited.
According to Bangladesh Bank, the number of borrowers who took over one-crore taka is 29,458 while the number of depositors with the commercial banks is 23,130.
The borrowers took a total of Tk 144,855 crore while the figure of deposit is Tk 100,544 crore by the listed millionaire that shows that the borrowers took Tk 44,311 crore over the deposits.
In 2009, the banking sector disbursed Tk 233,480 crore in loan while the number of borrowers was 87,83,523. Of them, 29,458 people took loan amounting to over one- crore taka, totaling Tk 144,855 crore which stands at over 62 percent of the loans taken by 34 percent depositors.
In 2008, the number of borrowers was 25,206 and they took over 62 percent of the credits. As per the estimate, the number of borrowers who took over Tk one crore has increased by 4525.
Banking experts said most of the depositors with the banks keep their money for savings while “the millionaires showed a tendency of borrowing instead of deposit”.
In 1975, the number of borrowers who took over one-crore-taka loan was only 212. In 1990, the figure surged up to 2,125 who took 38 percent of the total loan.
