Milk Vita cooperators strike withdrawn

SIRAGAMNJ: The dairy farmers’ cooperatives of Baghabari called off their indefinite strike on positive assurances of fulfilling their demands that include removal of the general manager of Milk Vita.

They withdrew the strike as Deputy Commissioner Md Aminul Islam conveyed a message from local MP Chayan Islam that carried assurances from the government authorities.

A view-exchange meeting was held on the Baghabari Milk Vita premises of Shahjadpur upazila with the agitating farmers at around 4pm.

Aminul, quoting the ruling-party lawmaker, said that he discussed the three-point demand of the cooperators with government high-ups and they gave a “positive assurance about it”.

The dairy farmers’ cooperatives of Sirajganj and Pabna stopped supplying milk from Thursday morning to press their demand for removal of the Milk Vita General Manager, Nasim Ahmed, fixing procurement price of milk at Tk 35 a litre and election to the Milk Vita Cooperative union.

Earlier State Minister for LGRD Jahangir Kabir Nanok backed up the cause of strikers as Milk Vita cooperators Thursday stopped supply of milk to the government-run marketing company to realize their three demands.

“The demands are logical,” said Nanok.

He said, “Though there is corruption in Milk Vita, the company earned Tk 16 core net profit last year.”
