DHAKA: The government is set to form a specialised institution like the Grameen Bank and preparation also in final stage to form the specialized bank to challenge Grameen Bank.
Dr Muhammad Yunus and Grameen Bank both are famous all over the world which is a matter of envy to the government which pushed the government to set up a bank like this, said sources concerned.
The government put emphasis on launching a bank from last July but Bangladesh Bank has opposed this proposal recently.
Sources said the government interfered the way of the Grameen Bank because it wants to reduce unilateral reputation of the bank for poverty reduction from rural areas. Through establishing the new bank the government also wants to attain recognition for its role in rural development and remove poverty from the country.
The proposed Bank will be named as “Palli Sanchoy Bank” and will run its operations in 485 upazilas across the country. There will be 17 persons in the board of directors including government officials as well. The capital of the bank is around TK 600 crore.
Though central bank opposed the formation of the bank, the government is preparing to launch the bank as soon as possible. With the special amendment of law this bank will be ready to provide its basic services.
