Fide Master Kazi Zarin Tasnim wins Intra-IUB Chess Tournament

Fide Master Kazi Zarin Tasnim has become champion in the Independence Day Intra-IUB Chess Tournament 2023. Zarin, who is a student of Computer Science and Engineering (CSE) at Independent University, Bangladesh (IUB), has a global rating of 1716. 

Amit Bikram Roy, another student of CSE at IUB who has a global rating of 1596, clinched the second position. 

The one-day tournament, organized by the IUB Chess Club in association with Division of Student Activities (DoSA), took place at the Multipurpose Hall on the university campus on March 30, 2023. A total of 68 IUB students took part in the tournament. 

Muntasir Mahmud Shakil, a student of Electrical and Electronic Engineering, emerged 2nd runner-up. Angshita Das and Zannatul Mawa Mowri, both from the Department of Environmental Science and Management, were adjudged the Best Female Players.

The opening ceremony was attended by Vice Chancellor Tanweer Hasan, PhD; Pro-Vice Chancellor Prof Niaz Ahmed Khan, PhD; Treasurer Khandker Md. Iftekhar Haider; Dean of School of Environment and Life Sciences Prof Dr Shah M Faruque; Dean of School of Liberal Arts & Social Sciences Prof Dr Bokhtiar Ahmed and IUB Chess Club Advisor Grandmaster Niaz Murshed.

The tournament consisted of seven rounds of rapid-chess. Each game was of 15 minutes' duration plus an additional five seconds increment after each move. There was no 'knock out'; hence all players took part in all the rounds. 

At the end of the seven rounds, Kazi Zareen Tasnim and Amit Bikram Roy were tied on 6.5 aggregate points. Eventually, the championship was decided according to the Buchholz tiebreaker rule.
