RAJSHAHI UNIVERSITY: More than 50 students of Rajshahi University were wounded - many sustained bullet injuries - on Sunday when they were attacked by leaders and activists of Chhatra League, the student wing of the ruling Awami League.
Witnesses said that around noon Chhatra League activists opened fire and attacked students who were staging a demonstration demanding cancellation of additional fees and introduction of evening master’s courses.
The armed attack triggered sporadic clashes between groups on the RU campus.
Police rushed to the spot and fired tear shells to bring the situation under control.
Officer-in-Charge of Matihar Police Station, Shamsun Noor, told banglanews that senior officials were monitoring the situation.
Earlier, on Saturday morning, hundreds of Rajshahi University students marched in a procession protesting the additional fees and shifting of master’s courses to the evening.
About two thousands students took part in the procession. The students locked all academic buildings from 7:00am yesterday.
On Thursday students had observed a strike and did not attend classes to draw the attention of university authorities to their demands.
