Yellow panel sweeps on RU elections

RAJSHAHI UNIVERSITY: Ruling Awami League-backed Yellow Panel (YP) swept on the senate and syndicate elections of Rajshahi University.

RU registrar, and also election commissioner, Professor Entazul Haque announced the result on 10:00pm Wednesday.

The Yellow Panel bagged all but three out of 33 posts for the teachers’ representative to the university Senate. Nationalist and Islamic Value believer’s teachers’ group Jatiyatabai Teachers’ Forum’s White Panel (WP) won only three posts.

Besides the Senate elections, polls were also held the same day for the Syndicate, for the representatives to the Academic Council, finance committee, planning and development committee and deans for the faculties of the university.

In the polls to the Syndicate members, AL-backed panel got four out of five posts and BNP-Jamaat-backed bagged the rest one while in the dean elections, Yellow Panel candidates won the six out of eight posts while rebels of two panels bagged one each.

In the other election to Academic Council, ruling party backed Panel won five out of six seats while WP bagged one post. The pro-BNP panel also separately won the seat for the teacher’s representative to the finance committee and the planning and development committee.

In the Syndicate election, Dr Jahagir Alam Saud (Liton) in `Provost`, Dr Selina Parvin in ‘Professor’, Abdullah Al Mamum in `Associate Professor`, Uzzal Hossain in `Assistant Professor`, won the elections defeating their rivals from white panel while the lone victor for the WP was Dr Al-Amin of Fisheries Department in `lecturer` category.

In the Dean elections, the YP’s winners were Professor Khadakar Farhad Hossain in Arts Faculty, Professor Dr. Habibur Rahman in Science faculty, Professor Nilufar Sultana in Social Science faculty Professor Absul Latif in Life and Earth Science faculty, Dr Shahana Kayes in Agriculture faculty and Professor Dr Abu Bakar Ismail in Engineering faculty.

Besides YP’s winners, Professor Dr. Amzad Hossain of WP won in Business Studies faculty and Professor Bishwajit Chandra of YP’s rebel candidate bagged the Law faculty.

Voting was held at the Zuberee Building on the campus from 8:00am to 2:00pm at a stretch. Some 1130 teachers cast their ballots in the elections.
