ISLAMIC UNIVERSITY: At least 20 people, including officials and activists of Bangladesh Chhatra League (BCL), were injured in a clash with police at Islamic University in Kushtia on Sunday.
Of the injured, five received bullet injury and four members of proctorial body were also attacked during in the clash.
Police claimed that BCL men vandalized a rifle and 20 police were also injured during the clash.
Besides, the BCL activists vandalized vehicle of vice-chancellor of the university in protest against staging rally of Islami Chhatra Shibir on the IU campus.
Witnesses said Chhatra Shibir brought out a procession protesting Israeli attacks on Gaza with the permission of the authorities of the university.
After their procession, BCL activists brought out a rally protesting the permission of Shibir’s procession.
The BCL activists later locked into clash with police and they attacked two police in front of academic building.
Then, another group of police opened fired 30 rounds of rubber bullets and charged baton to disperse the BCL men.
In the clash five BCL activists received bullet injury, said a spot account of the incident.
Proctor of the university Dr Mahbubar Rahman told banglanews that Shibir brought out a sudden rally and left the place immediately.
Officer-in-Charge of IU Thana Shariful Islam said police fired rubber bullets to protect themselves.
He said, “BCL activists vandalized a rifle and 20 police were injured in the clash.”
