Int’l Conference on literacy in city Monday

DHAKA: An international conference on ‘Girls & Women’s Literacy and Education’ will be held on Monday in the city to mark the International Literacy Day.

Primary and mass education minister Mostafizur Rahman informed it at press conference at secretariat on Sunday.

He said Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina will inaugurate the conference and hand over Unesco’s 2014 International Literacy Prizes to the awardees this year.

The Ministry of Foreign Affairs and the Ministry of Education in cooperation with the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (Unesco) are going to host the conference.

The minister said, this year International Literacy Day is more important than previous years. Theme of the day-- ‘Literacy and Sustainable Development”-- is very much time-befitting. 

Citing there are 2.5 crore illiterate people in the country, the minister said we have fixed the goal to wipe out the illiteracy.

Primary and mass education secretary Kazi Akhter Hossain, additional secretaries Sirajul Huq Khan, Gyanendra Kumar Biswas,  non-formal education bureau director general Jahir Uddin Ahmed, other senior officials were present at the time.
