GOPALGANJ: At least 21, including a teacher and five policemen, were injured during clashes at Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman Science & Technology University (BSMRSTU) here on Monday.
Minarul Islam, Associate Professor of Mathematics Department of the university was identified among the injured.
Witnesses told banglanews that the teacher was injured around 11:00am while police tried to disperse the students, who were staging demonstrations on Gopalganj-Tungipara road in front of the university in the morning.
However, the general students were demonstrating to press home their 17-point demand, including seats at the university halls, pure drinking water supply, bus fare reduction and students union election.
Later, another group of students attacked the demonstrating students following the injury of the teacher, sources added that left 10 students injured.
Later, on information, police rushed in and fired rubber bullets and tear-gas shell that left at least more five students injured.
Five policemen were also injured at that time when students throw brick-chips.
Science Faculty Dean M Shahjahan said university authorities came forward to bring the situation under control.
He said, “We are now talking with the students to solve the problems, he said adding more, whether the university will remain open or not it will be decided later.”
Gopalganj Sadar Thana Officer-in-Charge Zakir Hossain Mollah said additional police were deployed in the university area to avert any further untoward situation.
