3-day mourning progs on RU teacher murder

RU (RAJSHAHI): Sociology Department of Rajshahi University has announced a three-day mourning program over the killing of the department’s teacher AKM Shafiul Islam.

Head of the department Professor Wardatul Akram informed the media after a meeting at Sunday noon.

He said that all classes and examinations of the department would remain suspended during the program.

A human-chain program will be held at 11:00am Monday and Tuesday protesting the murder and demanding the arrest and punishment of the culprits.

Moreover, the department will send a letter to the university administration to take legal actions over the killing, the department head added.

However, the teachers and students brought out a protest rally and held demonstration on the university campus on Sunday. The classes and examinations on the day were also suspended.

University teachers’ association general secretary Pranab Kumar Pande told banglanews that an emergency meeting will be held Sunday evening to chalk-out fresh protest program that will be announced later in the day.

Earlier on Saturday afternoon, a group of miscreants attacked sociology department’s teacher AKM Shafiul Islam who was on his way to home by a motorcycle.

The miscreants intercepted his vehicle and stabbed indiscriminately on his neck and back with sharp weapons. They fled the scene leaving him critically inured.

Then, fatally injured Shafiul was rushed to Rajshahi Medical College and Hospital (RMCH) where he succumbed to his injuries.

However, Ansar-al-Islam had admitted the killing. This little known organization has taken the guilt within hours of Shafiul’s died.
