ISLAMIC UNIVERSITY (KUSHTIA): The Islamic University (IU) authorities declared the university closed and asked the students to leave halls after a student was killed in a road accident on the campus.
The decision came from an emergency meeting in on Sunday afternoon as IU students went berserk torching over 50 vehicles, blocking highway and vandalizing offices following the accident.
Male students were asked to vacate the halls by Sunday 6:00am while the female students were told to leave by Monday 10:00am.
Earlier, a hired bus of the university ran over Titu, a third year student of Biotechnology and Genetics Engineering Department, in the university area at 12:00 noon, hailed from Moheshpur upazila of Jhenidah district.
Witness said a Jhenidah-bound bus was standing in front of the university’s main entrance. Titu was getting on the bus using the backdoor; just then the bus began running, leaving him fallen on the ground. At that time, another speedy bus appeared and ran over Titu, killing him on the spot.
The killing sparked protest among the fellow students. Agitated students set fire to over 50 vehicles of the university and blockaded Kushtia-Khulna highway.
Angry students staged demonstration chanting slogan against the authorities and carried out vandalism at the administrative building.
Police opened fire teargas shells to disperse the students; but they, however, failed to do so. Several hundreds students also kept confined the university’s vice chancellor (VC) and pro-VC.
Meanwhile, students took position and staged demonstration in front the main entrance demanding not to leave the dormitories. Police also took position outside the main entrance.
