ISLAMIC UNIVERSITY (KUSHTIA): The Islamic University (IU) authorities have extended the deadline for vacating the hall from 6:00pm Sunday to 10:00am Monday considering the safety of the students.
IU pro vice-chancellor professor Dr Shahinoor Rahman confirmed the matter to banglanews around 5:30pm Sunday.
The authorities took the decision on allegation that the transport workers have been beating the students on Kushtia-Khulna highway.
Earlier, the authorities declared the university closed and asked the students to leave halls by 6:00pm Sunday following the death of Titu, a third year student of the university’s biotechnology and genetics engineering department, in a road accident on the campus around 12:00pm.
However, Titu’s death sparked widespread protest on the campus. Agitated students set fire on over 50 vehicles of the university and blockaded Kushtia-Khulna highway.
Angry students staged demonstration chanting slogan against the authorities and carried out vandalism at the administrative building.
Police fired teargas shells to disperse the students, but failed to do so. Moreover, several hundreds students confined the university’s VC and pro-VC.
Meanwhile, students took position and staged demonstrations in front the main entrance of the university demanding not to leave the dormitories.
Police also took position outside the main entrance.
