President put emphasis on research in varsities

DHAKA: President Abdul Hamid on Sunday urged students and teachers of universities of the country to pay attention to their research works.

He came up with the urge while distributing UGC awards 2012-2013 among 16 researchers at the Osmani Memorial Auditorium in the capital in afternoon.

A total of 16 researchers of different public and private universities have received the University Grants Commission (UGC) Award for their recognition of fundamental and innovative research.

The President opined that the award will inspire others fellows students-teachers to pay attention in research.

Mentioning that the process is going on to turn the University Grants Commission (UGC) to Higher Study Commission, the head of the state said UGC had started its journey with only six public universities.
 
Currently, 117 universities --80 private and 37 public universities—are being supervised by the UGC. UGC It will be easier to manage the public and private universities after tuning it to Higher Education Commission through increasing the manpower, the president informed the audiences.

The president also assured of giving all kind of support to make UGC as Higher Education Commission.

 With UGC chairman (state minister) Dr AK Azad Chowdhury in the chair, UGC member Dr Mohammad Mohammad Mohabbat Khan delivered welcome speech where Education Minister Nurul Islam Nahid was present as special guest.

16 award recipients

Ashfak Hossain of History department at Dhaka University, M Ziaul Huq Mamun of the institute of business administration (IBA), Dr Abul Hasnat of clinical pharmacy and pharmacology department, Dr Md Abu Bin Hasan Susan of chemistry department and Nazma Shaheen of the institute of nutrition and food will get the award for 2013. 

Jamila Ahmed Chowdhury and Taslima Yasmin of law department were nominated for the ward for 2012.

Dr. Mohammad Yunus Ali of Computer Science and Engineering Department at Bangladesh University of Science and Technology (BUET) Dr M Shah Alam of Electric and Electronic Engineering Department and Dr M Habibur Rahman of Civil Engineering Department.

Dr Tapan Kumar Saha of Chemistry Department at Jahangirnagar University (JU), Dr M Shahjahan of Fisheries Management Department at Bangladesh Agriculture University, D Mohamad Mizanur Rahman Khan of Chemistry Department at Shahjalal University of Science and Technology and D ABM Abdullah of Medicine Department at Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujib Medical University.

Besides, D Tanvir Ferdous Syed of Civil Engineering Department at Ahsanullah University of Science and Technology and M Nannu Mia of Law Department at Uttara University.

The awardees have received cheque of Tk50,000 each for their books and Tk30,000 each for their articles. They also got certificates and crests.
