DHAKA: The historic Education Day was observed across the country on Friday with a vow to implement the National Education Policy.
Different political and student organizations organised elaborate programmes commemorating the martyrs of the Day.
On this day in 1962, the student community staged a demonstration against the Hamudoor Rahman Education Commission report. Police fired on the demonstrators killing several students including Mostafa, Wajiullah and Babul and injuring many others.
After the killing of the students in police firing, the movement spread all over the country, which led to the six-point movement in 1966 and mass upsurge in 1969.
Marking the day, National Front of Teachers and Employees organized a discussion at the National Press Club at 11 am. Education Minister Nurul Islam Nahid attended the programme as chief guest.
Earlier, Chhatra League held another discussion at Dhaka University at 10 am. Different organizations placed floral wreaths at Shiksha Odhiker Chattar on DU campus.
