Approved education policy gets into print, online: Minister

DHAKA: Education Minister Nurul Islam Nahid Tuesday said the education policy has been formulated within the shortest time in the country’s history giving importance to modern and technology-based education.

“The education policy bill will be placed in Parliament next week for approval. After approval, it will be published in printed form and on website to inform all,” he said at a discussion here.

Bangladesh Institute of International and Strategic Studies (BIISS) organized the discussion titled “Education of Bangladesh: Present situation, challenges and future plan.”

The minister said, “We couldn’t introduce any education policy in last 40 years—it’s regretful. We’ve made this education policy within a short time by taking opinion from all.”

He assured that this education policy would not be a partisan one--it would be “national education policy”.

Nahid also informed that multiple initiatives would be taken to reduce the school dropout rate and 1,500 more primary schools would be established by the year 2011 for ensuring education for all.

Besides, vocational and polytechnic educational institutions would be established in each district, he also informed.

Editor of the upcoming English daily ‘The Daily Sun’ Prof Syed Anwar Hossain, who was also present at the discussion meet, pointed out that the new education policy contains many wrong words and inconsistencies.

BUET Vice-chancellor Dr. SM Nazrul Islam, Pro-VC Habibur Rahman and head of the cultural department of the German Embassy Silin Red were present at the discussion chaired by BIISS Chairman Major-General Mohammad Firdaus Mia.
