Ex-UGC Chairman Prof Zahurul Huq passes away Professor Dr. Zahurul Huq

DHAKA: Former Chairman of University Grants Commission of Bangladesh (UGC) and also a retired teacher of the Department of Economics of Dhaka University Professor Dr. Zahurul Huq passed away at Square Hospital in Dhaka Tuesday morning (February 7).

He was 79 years old.

He left behind his wife, one son, two daughters and a host of relatives and well-wishers to mourn his death.

A press release issued by UGC said that Zahurul Huq was suffering from kidney and liver cirrhosis for a long time.

The namaj-e-janaza of the Late Professor Huq was held at Dhaka University Central Mosque after Zuhr prayer.

Later, he was buried at Martyred Intellectuals’ Graveyard in Mirpur.

Professor Huq was the Chairman of University Grants Commission of Bangladesh during 1999 to 2003.

He also was the President of the Dhaka University Teachers’ Association and Federation of University Teachers’ Association. In addition, he served Dhaka WASA as its Chairman.

Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina expressed her deep shock at the demise of Professor Zahurul Huq.

She recalled the contributions of Professor Huq in the education sector and in various progressive movements.

Professor Abdul Mannan, Chairman of UGC, also expressed his deep shock at the death of Professor Huq.

In a condolence message, he said that the nation has lost a renowned educationist. The death of Professor Huq is an irreparable loss to the nation.

Professor Mannan prayed for the eternal peace of the departed soul and conveyed deep sympathy to the bereaved family members.
