DHAKA UNIVERSITY: Some leaders of the movement for quota reformation in public service government jobs were attacked on the Central Shaheed Minar premise Sunday (July 2).

They were attacked for the third consecutive day, while staging an agitation program, under the banner of Bangladesh General Students' Right Protection Council, around 11:15am.

The leaders of the students’ rights body accused Bangladesh Chhatra Legaue of the attack.

The leaders and activists of BCL beaten them up and snatched the banners away while the protesters were chanting slogans on the Shaheed Minar premise, said leaders of the students’ rights body.

The protesting students including Bangladesh General Students' Right Protection Council Convener Hasan Al Mamun, Joint Convener Faruk Hasan earlier took position there around 10:30am, to stage demonstration.

Leaders and activists of BCL’s central, DU and hall units including central committee publicity secretary Saif Babu, Hazi Muhammad Mohsin Hall unit general secretary Mehedi Hasan Sani and Bangabandhu Hall unit general secretary Al Amin Rahman were seen bragging there since before the attack.

At one stage, they beat up Joint Convener Faruk Hasan and took him away towards the police station.

While the journalists were trying to get comments from the BCL leaders, they disagreed at first. Afterwards, Hazi Muhamamd Mohsin Hall unit general secretary Mehedi Hasan said: “We had information that they (protesters) will bring out a flag rally and use the sticks attached to those to carry out an attack”

“Therefore, we obstructed (them) as the students of the varsity,” he added.

Lutfar Nahar Neela, Joint Convener of Bangladesh General Students' Right Protection Council, said: “BCL have carried out the attack before the eye of media. (They) have threatened to take (the protesters) away”

“We want the gazette (of quota reformation). We won’t wage the movement anymore if the gazette is issued”

“Next program will be disclosed after taking decision,” she added.
