RAJSHAHI: As many as 19 buildings including 4 dormitories of Rajshahi University (RU) reportedly have cracks and now in need of urgent renovation.
Moreover, roofs of many buildings have eroded so badly that they are at risk of collapse at any time, as university authorities raised their concern.
As many as 1,000 students live in the risky parts of the 4 dormitories.
It has been learnt that a team of experts from Bangladesh University of Engineering and Technology (BUET) inspected halls back in 1992, urging the varsity authorities about renovation.
On the contrary, current RU administration, hall administration and engineering department said they aren’t informed about it.
Engineering department said the building roofs are the main factors of risk. The roofs have become risky because of lack of renovation and cleaning work for a long period.
On behalf of the Vice-Chancellor, the engineering department was asked to send a budget to University Grants Commission (UGC) for the overall reform work of the university.
The department, however, said they did not get any such directions.
"We instructed the engineering department to prepare a budget for the overall renovation work and forward it to the UGC. Renovation work will start as soon as possible,” RU Vice Chancellor Prof Abdus Sobhan told Banglanews.
