DHAKA: The hunger strike of secondary school teachers who recruited under Secondary Education Quality and Access Enhancement Project (SEQAEP) demanding regularization of jobs has entered the sixth day on Friday (Feb 8).

After staging the six-day-long strike under the banner of the additional class teachers’ (ACT) association in front of National Press Club, the agitating teachers announced to go for a fast-unto-death to realize their demand.

In 2015, the government recruited a total of 5,200 teachers as ACT for 2,100 secondary schools in 250 upazilas under the project titled SEQAEP, funded by World Bank to increase skills of students in math, science and English.

The project expired on December 31, 2017. After completion of the project, the government assured them that their jobs would be made permanent, but their jobs would yet to become permanent.

“Fast-unto-death will be staged if our demand for job regularization is not met by Sunday,” said Mamun Hossain, central unit president of the additional class teachers’ (ACT) association this morning.

Associations’ central leaders Rumel Haider, Ifti Rahman, Anwarul Islam, Atikur Rahman and Abdur Rashid also spoke the programme.
