Veteran singer and composer Kabir Suman has been admitted to a state-owned hospital in Kolkata and is now on oxygen support following complaints of breathing, sore throat and high fever.

Suman, aged 72, was being attended to in cabin number 103 at the Woodburn ward of West Bengal government’s Seth Sukhlal Karnani Memorial Hospital, formerly known as PG Hospital, said Soumitra Ghosh, head of the medicine department of the hospital who is currently treating the patient.

Kabir Suman was admitted late last night with fever and shortness of breath. At the time of admission, his oxygen level was 90. So, he has been put on oxygen support and given other medicines at the moment, Ghosh said.

An RT-PCR test has been done to ascertain if he has been affected by Covid-19 but the report came out negative. Kabir was in Dhaka recently and attended the Dhaka International Film Festival.

Some of his most popular albums are Tomake Chai and Boshe Anko.

Kabir Suman was a member of parliament of India in the 15th Lok Sabha after being elected from Jadavpur constituency in south Kolkata as a candidate of West Bengal’s ruling Trinamool Congress from 2009 to 2014.

A two-member team under Arunava Sengupta was formed to treat Suman, an official said, adding CT Scan, X-ray of his chest and other requisite blood tests would be conducted on the singer soon.

Meanwhile, Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee visited Kabir Suman in the hospital and conveyed her best wishes for his quick recovery.
