Dhaka Fashion Week 2010 ended with a blast 20 July night at Westin Dhaka promoting a celebration of choices and respecting difference. A select group of elite audience was mesmerized to witness a diverse range of dazzling Summer Creations of the topnotch designers of the country.
9 (Nine) fashion labels and designers, including, Mariamah, Jatra, Sadakalo, Paira, Saymbara and Mukul showcased their creations, all celebrating peoples’ right to choose what to wear and what not to wear by presenting a diverse range of collections.
Ms. Kawshiki Nasser, President Dhaka Fashion Week, said, “in a world torn by Wars and famines, designers are the artists who have the vision to imagine a different world … A world that celebrates diversity and respect choices… This year’s Dhaka Fashion Week is all about reminding you that we all have a right to choose. Mr. Animesh Kundu, Managing Director Otobi, Ms. Kat Burton, Country Head, AFP and Selim Omarao Khan were present as special guests while Abdus Salam.
The evening started with Mariamah by Roxana Salam. Mariamah, displayed an enviable collection of abaya’s in different shades of Gold, blue and brown taking inspiration from different traditions like Chinese, Arab, Indian and continental. Mariamah’s collection proved Contrary to the popular belief, it’s the more you conceal ……the more you leave for the imagination of the audience, the more beautiful you look… the more desirable you become….
Next came the hip, the chick and the post millennium collection of Mahmudul Hasan Mukul. He was followed by Mansha and Fortuna. Then came the strikingly elegant collection of Saymbara by Shirin Karim.
Taking inspiration from nature Shirin Karim of Sayambara created a awestruck collection. Apart from trees, flower, butterflies, shrubs and bushes Designer her designs also included Geometrical designs. She has a weakness for ‘kalka motife’.
In her finest and one of the most eyes catching collections of sarees Shirin enslaved the audience within seconds. Muslin, jamdani, silk, cotton, andi silk, andi cotton are the materials that are being used in which she had done embroidery, block, handwork. Block with nakshi katha, jamdani katwar and dakka defies her creative genious. Apart from usage of sequin stich she also has an arsenal of base colour red, blue, yellow, green, and nature colours and designs to make you completely spell bound. Traditional and trendy designs are both at her mastery.
Sadakalo presented a collection of Maslin, half silk and silk Saris and silk and cotton Panjabis. The white , black and ash moslins have embroideries, block and eplick works on them and the silks have works done with fril and laces.
To bring back the golden glory days of Jute… Designer Uttam Gosh has created a unique clothing and accessories line with jute. The refreshingly surprising collection of suits, western outfits, maslins and jamdani saris made with a blending of jute fiber was one of the highlights of this year’s fashion week.
Everybody is talking about Jatra these days. And they showed last night why. The combination of Jatra’s ethnic collection celebrating diversity along with the performances of DHOLIS from monipur, sylhet, created the magic realism of Jatra.
Finally, in an attempt to imagine a world that celebrates diversity and respect choices the grand finale of the Dhaka Fashion Week 2010 was a Performance of Movements directed by Fashion Show director Kawshiki Nasser. The Installation Art on the Move, was based on the theme of Dhaka Fashion Week 2010, a celebration of choices. Models performed on the stage wearing a diverse range of clothing and accessories associated with a multiplicity of culture, customs, tastes and faiths. It was a celebration of our Rights to choose, our living, our lifestyle our faiths by catwalk on the runway by 12 top models of the country. Some wearing Abaya/ hizab , Some wearing skirts/tops, some wearing saris while others wearing t-shirts. The evening ended with a glimmer of hope that a world respecting diversity and difference and celebrating choices is indeed achievable.
