DHAKA: He's one of the biggest stars in the world, and now Leonardo DiCaprio be using that visibility to help the United Nations fight climate change.
With an eye towards environmental issues, UN Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon officially designated the actor as a Messenger of Peace, joining such other luminaries as George Clooney, Charlize Theron, Michael Douglas and musician Yo-Yo Ma.
In a statement, Ban praised DiCaprio’s dedication to the cause.
“DiCaprio is a credible voice in the environmental movement, and has a considerable platform to amplify its message,” he said. “I am pleased he has chosen to add his voice to UN efforts to raise awareness of the urgency and benefits of acting now to combat climate change.”
DiCaprio has long been an advocate on a variety of issues, having established a foundation in 1998 dedicated to conservation and humanitarian affairs. Among its initiatives include grants to protect tigers and elephants from extinction, save the rainforests and provide access to clean drinking water.
In 2007, Leo created, produced and narrated a feature-length documentary titled The 11th Hour about the state of the planet and specifically, global warming, reports MTV UK.
The actor is just the latest A-lister to join the organisation. Angelina Jolie has been a Special Envoy to the UN High Commissioner for Refugees since 2012.
