DHAKA: Bollywood superstar Aamir Khan-starrer PK had a strong opening at the global box office, picking up $29 million (about 1.76 billion rupees). The film made over $21 million in India, reports The Hollywood Reporter.
Toplined by superstar Aamir Khan, the film was released by UTV Motion Pictures, a unit of Disney India. According to the studio, on Sunday alone PK grossed over $6 million, considered the highest single-day take for a Hindi film.
Internationally, the film grossed $7.68 million — it recorded the highest U.S. weekend opening for a Hindi film at $3.46 million, landing in eighth position.
Similarly, the film had a strong U.K. opening, crossing over $1 million, considered the highest opening for an Indian film in 2014. In Australia, PK collected $554,130, estimated to be the second-highest opening weekend for a Hindi film after 2013 blockbuster Dhoom:3.
PK was released in about 4,000 screens in India and in 844 screens in over 40 overseas markets. The overseas rollout is the widest for any Indian film, according to the studio.
PK is directed by Rajkumar Hirani and produced by Vidhu Vinod Chopra. Along with Khan, the trio delivered the 2008 hit 3 Idiots.
