DHAKA: Ekushey Padak and National Film Award winner noted filmmaker Chashi Nazrul Islam passed away at a city hospital early Sunday. He was 73.
Nazrul, who had been suffering from Liver cancer, breathed his last at Labaid Specialized Hospital of the city around 6:00am.
Nazrul’s assistant personal secretary Shadat Setu confirmed the matter to banglanews.
Born in October 23, 1941 in Bikrampur of Dhaka, Nazrul began his career in a radio in 1965. He directed and voiced popular radio dramas Ramer Sumoti (1965), Socrates (1966), Sokhina Birongona (1974) etc.
He started his career in visual media in 1964 in television. He worked as assistant director of film Dui Digonto, directed by Obaidur Rahman. Later he assisted Fateh Lohani.
He participated in the 1971 Liberation War. After independence, he made the first film on liberation war Ora Egaro Jon – the most famous work of Nazrul.
