DHAKA: A Canadian expatriate Bangladeshi poet Shahana Akhter Mahua has brought a book of translated poems, ‘Durer Canvas’, in the ongoing Ekushey book fair.
The book contains translations of poems, written by a few Canadian indigenous poetesses.
These poems depicted the encroachment of modernity and its subsequent integration in the lives of indigenous people.
The poems also highlighted the traditional ideas and images about love, life and beliefs that these indigenous people have kept intact from the pre-colonial period.
Mahua said daily life of indigenous people is poetic and the poems transpired it throughout the volume.
Shahana Akhter Mahua was born in Natore of Bangladesh. She never stopped writing amid crises of expatriate life.
A bit reclusive, Mahua is the editor of a literary journal ‘Chhandas’.
She also received Jatindramohan Bagchi Award from West Bengal of India in 2006 for her contributions in poetry.
