Acclaimed Bollywood and Hollywood actor Irrfan khan is currently admitted to Mumbai's Kokilaben Dhirubhai Ambani hospital.
Irrfan lost his mother, Saeeda Begum, earlier this week, and could not attend her funeral in Jaipur due to the nationwide lockdown. While it was reported that the actor wasn't in India at the time of her death, he was, in fact, in Mumbai. The actor was unwell and unable to attend the funeral because of the lockdown. He spoke to his family in Jaipur over a video call.
Irrfan, 54, has had a rough few years after being diagnosed with a neuroendocrine tumour, which required medical attention and kept the actor away from Bollywood for a year.
Earlier this year, Irrfan kept away from the promotions of Angrezi Medium, his latest film that released in March, due to his health. The theatrical release of Angrezi Medium was also affected due to the novel coronavirus outbreak. Angrezi Medium later had an online premiere, on Disney+Hotstar. In fact, Irrfan was under treatment while they were shooting for the film in UK.
Irrfan lives in Mumbai with his wife Sutapa Sikdar and two sons, Babil and Ayan, who are currently with him in the hospital.
A native of Rajasthan, Irrfan studied at the National School of Drama. He came to Mumbai in the 80s and started with TV shows like Chanakya, Banegi Apni Baat, Bharat Ek Khoj and Chandrakanta. He made his movie debut with Mira Nair's Salaam Bombay in 1988. Later, he did many films but was noticed with films like Maqbool, Life In A Metro and Paan Singh Tomar.
He has also been associated with many international films like Slumdog Millionaire, A Mighty Heart, Jurassic World and The Amazing Spider-Man. His best though is Ang Lee's Life Of Pi, which was both a commercial and critical success. He later did Inferno with Hollywood actor Tom Hanks.
His commercial hits in Bollywood include Piku, The Lunchbox and Hindi Medium. In 2017, he turned producer with Qarib Qarib Singlle along with his wife Sutapa. In 2018, he was seen in Karwaan and Blackmail, both of which had a lukewarm response at the box office.
Irrfan also worked in Doob- No Bed of Roses, a 2017 Bangladesh-India co-production drama film written and directed by Mostofa Sarwar Farooki.
Irrfan was diagnosed with a neuroendocrine tumour in 2018 and had been undergoing treatment in the UK. After recovering, he wrapped up Angrezi Medium but hasn't signed any new films yet.
