The High Court today (March 1) stayed the trial proceedings in the drug case filed against actress Shamsunnahar Smrity, popularly known as Pori Moni, for three months. 

A bench of Justice Mustafa Zaman Islam and Justice Md Salim also asked the government and the police to explain in four weeks why the proceedings in the case against Pori Moni would not be quashed.

The HC bench issued the ruling after hearing a petition filed by Pori Moni for quashing proceedings against her.

Earlier, judge Mohammad Nazrul Islam of Dhaka Special Court 10 recorded the deposition of one prosecution witness in the case, assistant attorney general Mizanur Rahman said.

On January 5, the judge framed charges against Pori Moni and her two associates — Ashraful Islam Dipu and Kabir Hossain — in the case.

Criminal Investigation Department (CID) and investigation officer Kazi Golam Mostafa submitted the charge-sheet to the Chief Metropolitan Magistrate’s Court of Dhaka on October 4 last year.

Pori Moni was interrogated in three phases since RAB arrested her on August 4, 2021.

Later, a case was filed against the actress for illegal possession of alcohol and drugs in her house.
