At least six types of street foods in the capital, including chatpati and sugarcane juice, contain high levels of different bacteria that cause diarrhea and other stomach diseases, according to a government-backed study.
The Bangladesh Food Safety Authority (BFSA) sponsored the study and published the results at a seminar held on the organisation's premises on Sunday.
Dr Md Latiful Bari, chief scientist at Food and Nutrition Research Laboratory of University of Dhaka, disclosed the results.
However, maximum four people in every 10,000 are falling sick due to the presence of bacteria in street foods, the research has found saying it could not determine the cause for such low level of affliction.
People are getting infected, but surprisingly are not falling sick, Latiful Bari said while disclosing the research findings.
Nonetheless, he emphasised adequate hygiene training for the street food vendors and monitoring to reduce the contamination of the foods.
