DHAKA: One of the most common ailments that elders suffer from is arthritis. Swelling in joints and acute pain are some of its characteristics, making it difficult for the person to even perform normal activities.
Here are some points to keep in mind so that people with arthritis don't strain their joints much, The Times of India.
Never put pressure on any one particular joint. For instance, if you are pushing the cupboard to another place or opening a door, make sure you use both your hands and knees to do the same. Spreading the strain equally on all joints will ease out the pain.
Don't sit in the same position for longer hours. Take a small break in between; go for a short walk in the open or pace the length of the room. Once you form a pattern, stick to it.
Leading a sedentary lifestyle is not advisable for people with arthritis. Activities are not harmful; you just need to do them wisely. Push, slide or shove things instead of lifting them. Use your palms to hold things, use your side to push heavy items instead of your thigh or knees.
Restrict bending. Organize your house in such a way that you can reach the items you need by just extending your hand. Bending down unnecessarily will cause excess strain to the joints. In case you have to bend down, keep your back straight to even the pressure.
