DHAKA: According to World Health Organization (WHO), around 57,000 people die and 382,000 become disables every year due to tobacco consumption in Bangladesh.
Speakers placed the data in front of the audience at a seminar on annual tuberculosis prevention program organized by National Anti Tuberculosis Association of Bangladesh (NATAB) at LGED auditorium in city on Saturday noon.
According to the data, 43.3 percent adult people, including 58 percent male and 29 percent female, in the country are involved in tobacco use.
Meanwhile, 45 percent male and 1.5 percent female smoke in the country, the date said. However, country’s 67.8 percent men and 30.4 percent women fall victims of indirect smoking.
Food minister Advocate Qamrul Islam said at the seminar that all political parties should be united in some specific sectors, including health so that the nation can reach to its expected goal.
NATAB executive committee senior vice-president Mozaffar Hossain Paltu chaired the seminar, attended by NATAB program coordinator Dr Akramul Islam, Nurul Fazle Bulbul and Dr Shahnewaz Chowdhury, among others.
