Licenses of 3 drinking water brands cancelled

DHAKA: Bangladesh Standards & Testing Institution (BSTI) cancelled licence of three drinking water companies for low quality manufacture.

Bottled and jarred water of 10 brands available in market is of poor standard, BSTI said in a report.

Of the companies, licence of three has been cancelled and the rest suspended.

The brands lost licence are—Ananda Plus (jar) of Ananda Food & Beverage, Real First (jar) of Real Food & Beverage and Best One (bottle) of Best One Drinking.

The BSTI report was presented before the High Court bench of Justice Sheikh Hasan Arif and Justice Rajik Al Jalil on Tuesday (Feb 26).

Deputy Attorney General Md Mokhlesur Rahman moved for the state, Md JR Khan Robin for the petitioner and Barrister Muhammad Faridul Islam for the Bangladesh Food Safety Authority (BFSA).

Earlier, BSTI declared 5 companies low-standard, in a report on Jan 21.

Lawyer Shammi Akter filed the writ over safe drinking water with the HC for public interest on May 27, 2018.

The HC then directed the authorities concerned to stop supply of illegal and unsafe bottled and jarred water in the market, during a hearing on Dec 3.

On Tuesday, BFSA was ordered to present its initiatives before the court, for ensuring safe water, next Tuesday.
