DHAKA: Experts said as many as five crore people, 30 percent of the country's population, are suffering from Thyroid problems.
Large three crore of the victims don't even know what they are suffering from and most of them live in the countryside.
The shocking information was revealed at an awareness raising meeting marking World Thyroid Day, at BIRDEM General Hospital here Saturday (May 25).
Bangladesh is a region that lacks iron (Fe) and has only 150 endocrinologists. The outbreak of fatal diseases like Thyroid problem is originated from the iron shortage, said expert physicians at the meeting.
They demanded the authorities to enlist Thyroid linked diseases as non-communicable ones and improved laboratories.
BIRDEM General Hospital Director General Prof Dr Zafar A Latif attended the meeting as the chief guest, chaired by Bangladesh Endocrine Society President Prof Dr Md Faruq Pathan.
