DHAKA: Dengue fever has started increasing in the capital city at the beginning of this year. However, the prevalence of Dengue has increased due to pre-monsoon rains.
From January 1 to Wednesday (June 19), 662 people have been infected with dengue. Of them, 153 people were infected with Dengue fever in May, and 370 people were diagnosed till June 19.
This information was found in the National Health Crisis Center of Directorate General of Health Services (DGHS).
According to National Health Crisis Center, Dhaka Medical College and Hospital has treated a significant number of dengue patients on last Wednesday and Thursday.
On Wednesday, 46 people were admitted with symptoms consistent with dengue fever while 31 Dengue patients n Thursday. 662 people have been infected with dengue so far from January this year.
Dengue fever is a mosquito-borne tropical disease caused by the dengue virus. Typically, symptoms begin three to fourteen days after infection from mosquito bites. This may include high fever, headache, vomiting, muscle and joint pains, and skin rash.
Contacted, director of the Health Department's Directorate of Disease Control, Dr. Sania Tahmina told Banglanews that in the meantime, special equipments for the diagnosis of Dengue Disease has been distributed in various government hospitals in Dhaka.
Survey program is going on as well as larvicides and adulticides medicines have been spraying at the Hazrat Shahjalal International Airport to detect Aedes mosquito here.
Aedes mosquito species have adapted well to human habitation, often breeding around dwellings in small amounts of stagnant water found in old tires or other small containers discarded by humans. Even a bottle cap filled with water can serve as to incubate and hatch Aedes eggs.
“Physicians of all government medical hospitals and key private hospitals have been instructed to provide proper treatment for patients with dengue,” Dr. Sania Tahmina said adding that the ICU chiefs have been trained by experts for providing medical care to complicated patients as per the Dengue National Guideline.
Training programs for doctors and nurses on Dengue and Chikungunya are in progress, she further said.
She said that a high level 30-member technical committee, led by DG of Directorate General of Health Services (DGHS), has been constituted in March this year to coordinate the Aedes mosquito-borne diseases (Dengue, Chikungunya and Zika) control program.
