GAZIPUR: Fifty-seven-year old Ameena Begum, a resident of Karihata Union in Kapasia upazila of Gazipur, has been suffering from kidney disease for a long time. She has arrived at Sheikh Fazilatunnessa Mujib Memorial KPJ Specialized Hospital & Nursing College, located at Tetuibari in Kasimpur of Gazipur.

Though patients once used to throng renowned hospitals in Dhaka for better treatment, now hundreds of patients like Amena Begum from Ghazipur and its surrounding districts flock to Fazilatunnessa Mujib Memoril Hospital to avail world-class medical care.

A large number of garment workers of these areas are also receiving sophisticated health care from the hospital. The hospital has a 'Poor Fund' for poor patients.

Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina herself also comes to this hospital often for regular medical check-ups and medical care.

Farhan Shahriar, Amena Begum’s son accompanying her, who is a student of Dhaka University student, told Banglanews: “Earlier, when any of our family members or relatives fell sick, we would go to the big government, private hospitals in Dhaka. Now, this hospital offers world-class medical care in our neighborhood. Our relatives and acquaintances are also receiving treatment from this hospital.”

Amena Begum said: “I started receiving treatment in Dhaka after experiencing a kidney problem. Later, I heard the reputation of this hospital. Since then, I have been taking treatment from here. The doctors here are good, the treatment is good too. I am better than ever with the mercy of Allah.”

Afroza Mim, a garment worker and a resident of Gazipur Sadar, said: “This area, at one time, lacked modern medical care. Now, low-income workers like us can get treatment from here.”

Kampulan Perutan Jahr (KPJ), the renowned service-providing company of Malaysia, is in charge of the overall management of Fazilatunnessa Mujib Memoril Hospital.

The hospital is financed by Sheikh Mujibur Rahman Memorial Trust and the Government of Bangladesh.

Apart from experienced doctors, this hospital is equipped with sophisticated medical equipment and technology. Already, complex operations have successfully been performed of various diseases including dietary replacement.

Here, all diseases are cured of through world-class treatment and operation in external and internal departments. Special arrangements are there to provide quick medical care for the injured of road accidents.

A year ago, a girl named Asha Akhtar Akhi, aged 19, who is a resident of Kaliakair upazila of Gazipur, drank Harpic (a toilet bowl cleaner) on impulse. It burnt her esophagus. After rushing between different hospitals, Akhi was treated at Fazilatunnessa Mujib Memorial Hospital.

Akhi’s dietary canal was cut off and then replanted from her own colon. Physicians replace the esophagus with their sophisticated instrument. The closed part of the stomach was bypassed by the small intestine. 6 pairs were given in her stomach. After a long treatment, Akhi is now living a normal life.

Hasan Zahid Tushar, deputy press secretary to the Prime Minister Sheikh Hasan, told Banglanews that the premier had born medical expenses for Akhi.

Akhi told Banglanews: “Everyone thought I would not live anymore. May be, I got new life thanks to modern treatment of Sheikh Fazilatunnessa Mujib Memorial KPJ Specialized Hospital and skilled doctors.”

She said she was lucky to have found advanced treatment in a nearby hospital. Otherwise, maybe something else could happen to her if taken Dhaka.

Akhi thanked the Prime Minister for the medical expenses and setting up such a hospital in Gazipur.

Dr. Razeeb Hassan and Dr. J. M. H Qausar Alam performed the successful operation for Akhi.

Surgeon of the hospital Razeeb Hassan told Banglanews that the hospital offers operation and medical care for all diseases including esophagus, stomach, colon, liver and cancer.

He said: “This hospital offers advanced treatment for all diseases. I do not think there is a need to go to a renowned hospital in Dhaka for advanced treatment. People of this place also think so, because they come to the hospital for treatment of various complex diseases. Earlier, many of them used to go to Dhaka for treatment.”

The hospital Assistant Manager (Business Development Service) Abul Hassan told Banglanews: “Since the opportunity to get sophisticated medical care here has been created, people who are living in the surrounding areas are not going to Dhaka anymore. They are getting treatment here. This opportunity was not here before.”

He said that more and more patients are coming, from all the districts of the country, to this hospital than ever.

Abul Hasan said, Sheikh Fazilatunnessa Mujib Memorial KPJ Specialized Hospital & Nursing College is the first IMS Certified one.

He said each department has a separate quality object, which guarantees satisfactory healthcare to patients. The hospital authorities are committed to ensuring quality in providing services.

Stating that there is a fund for the poor patients, he said that the Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina created the fund for poor patients. The fund provides medical care to extremely poor patients.

Experienced doctors of external department provide medical service alongside indoor service. 

Abul Hasan said this hospital provides treatment for Internal Medicine, Neurology, Gynecology, Obstetric Services, General and Laparoscopic Surgery, Heart Disease, Orthopedics, Gastrology, Pediatricians, Eye Diseases, Nose & Throat, Kidney, Liver, Lung, Urology, Burn & Plastic Surgery, Diabetes, psychosis, skin-allergies and sexually transmitted diseases.

Other significant services offered at this hospital include 24-hour accident and emergency care unit, X-ray, ultrasonogram, MRI, CT scan, 3-D ultrasound, bone mineral density (BMD) test, ICU, CCU, advanced operation theater, cath, Lab, MR Angiogram, City Angiogram, CT Coronary Angiogram, Angioplasty, Kidney Dialysis, Physiotherapy Service, SPE Marshal Baby Care Unit, pain management centers, nutrition counseling, weight control, immunization, 24-hour ambulance service using the latest technology for all types of pathological tests.

Malaysian Prime Minister Mohammad Najib bin Tun Haji Abdul Razak and  Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina and her younger sister Sheikh Rehana jointly inaugurated the hospital on November 18 of 2013.

However, the construction of the hospital started on January 14 of 2011. It is a Public-Private-Partnership (PPP) organization. Later, Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina also inaugurated it in 2015.
