World leaders have gathered in Baku, Azerbaijan, to kick off the 29th United Nations Climate Change Conference (COP29), set to take place from November 11 to 22, 2024.
This year's summit comes at a critical time as countries confront escalating climate impacts while global cooperation faces geopolitical tensions.
The conference aims to address several urgent climate priorities, including setting a new global climate finance target. The current $100 billion annual pledge, agreed upon in previous years, is set for review, with expectations for increased contributions to help vulnerable nations adapt to climate change.
Delegates are also pushing for enhanced Nationally Determined Contributions (NDCs) to accelerate global efforts towards carbon neutrality by mid-century.
One of the focal points of COP29 is the operationalization of the Loss and Damage Fund, established to support countries hit hardest by climate-related disasters.
Additionally, discussions will cover advancing the Global Goal on Adaptation, urging countries to move from planning to implementing concrete climate adaptation measures. Given the conference's venue in Baku, known for hosting international events, Azerbaijan aims to spotlight regional challenges, such as rising sea levels and desertification, affecting the Caspian region.
This year, COP29 also marks a "triple COP" year, aligning with international conferences on biodiversity and desertification. This convergence provides a unique opportunity for integrated climate action across global environmental issues, including ecosystem restoration and sustainable urban planning.
