If you want your friends to like your boyfriend, and you don’t want to lose your boyfriend’s trust, keep mum about these 10 things.
Woman talking to her friends
If you`re like me, keeping anything from your girlfriends is difficult! However, it`s more important for them to support your relationship (if you`re happy), than to know the details of your private life with your boyfriend. Here are 11 things not to share with your friends, if you want them to like your significant other.
1
That one time when he...
Every couple fights. But if you tell your friends about every little spat, they`ll think you`re in a toxic relationship or that the two of you aren`t compatible.
A friend of mine told me her boyfriend once "threw a book in her direction" during a fight. Now they`re married and he seems totally normal, but I can`t help but remember that he did that to her. And she`s long forgotten and forgiven.
2
Who pays for what
It`s no one`s business who pays for what in a relationship. If you end up paying for dinner 80 percent of the time, or loaning your boyfriend money, it`s probably better to keep that to yourself. Your friends don`t understand his financial situation, and they`ll think he`s using you or a deadbeat.
3
That he doesn`t like your friends
Obviously, this is a big one, and if he doesn`t like your friends, you`ll have to reflect on why that is and who is more important to you. If you plan to keep him around, don`t tell your friends that he`s not crazy about them!
4
That you don`t talk about marriage
If you`ve been together for a while, it`s expected that you`ll want to settle down together. If you don`t have these types of conversations yet, your friends might conclude that he`s not serious about you.
5
His flaws and bad habits
If you tell your friends that your boyfriend always leaves the toilet seat up or leaves his wet towel on the floor, they could blow that tiny flaw way out of proportion and upset you even more about the issue.
6
Your irrational suspicions
If you`re simply the jealous type and know there`s nothing to worry about deep down, don`t mention that you find him going out to the garage to make phone calls occasionally. He could be calling the office or his mom, and until you find out for sure, don`t falsely accuse him.
7
His family`s dirty laundry
It can be easy to rip on his loser brother or cousin who`s in prison, but you don`t want that information to reflect negatively on your boyfriend.
8
That he`s cheated on an ex
You might be able to get past the fact that he`s cheated on an ex, but your friends never will!
9
Things you haven`t discussed with him yet
If there`s something you need to tell him — like, that he needs to try harder to find a full-time job or that you think he drinks too much — certainly, don`t tell your friends first.
10
That terrible gift he bought you
So he bought you a vacuum for Valentine`s Day — he heard you mention to your mom that you wanted one and he had the best intentions. Shy away from telling embarrassing stories about him that your girlfriends will never forget.
