This means your hair will not be a lumpy mop soon after you step out of a public transport and your blow dry will last much longer. While many in the West have been asking for a scalp botox, in a bid to have glossy locks like Kate Middleton's, the fad is catching up in the city as well.
Cosmetic surgeon Suhil Agarkar says, Botox is a costly process, and has mostly been used to reduce wrinkles and lift sagging skin. But, in the last couple of years, doctors discovered that the drug was also helpful in handling migraine, acnes and axillary hyperhidrosis (excessive sweating). More recently, experts have been injecting botox on scalp to keep perspiration under control. It's not a prescribed procedure, but there's demand for it in Mumbai.
Ritu Aurora, a salon specialist, says, Because botox reduces sweating, it is helpful in maintaining locks that have been straightened or blow-dried. While the straightening effect lasts for up to eight or nine months, a spa blow dry remains intact for about three months. In addition, this procedure makes the texture of your hair glossy.
The procedure
Dermatologist Divakar Mehta, who has been performing this ritual for the last four months, says, The serum is injected superficially into the follicle opening. The needles are small, and we usually use about 150 shots to cover the entire scalp. The procedure can last up to 30 minutes. Depending on the individual, perspiration either completely stops or reduces to a large extent. He adds, Treating hyperhidrosis using botox is an approved procedure, and the benefit it has on hair is just a by-product.
Who should opt for it
People who are likely to sweat more, like those dealing with hormonal imbalance and women who are nearing their menopause, can benefit from this. Ritu adds, Women who are actively into sports, dance and other forms of physically exhausting activities can also try it out because this gives their hair strength and lustre. But, I don't think women should try it out just so that they can prolong the effects on their spa-pampered hair.
Suhil adds, Hyperhidrosis is a nasty condition where people sweat a lot even when they are doing nothing. So, irrespective of the weather condition and the activities you do, you will form perspiration line on the frontal hairline. Scalp botox is useful for them.
Surbhi Punj, a student of fashion technology, says, Firstly, getting a botox is a painful procedure. I can't imagine injecting hundreds of needles on a scalp, which is thicker than most parts of the skin. Secondly, why would I dish out thousands to get a botox when I can just get my hair blow dried in a salon for just a couple of hundreds I agree that women who gym in the morning, don't have to spend hours trying to set their hair after a wash, but there are so many other legit and easy ways to maintain your tresses without stress.
