How to (semi)permanently curl your eyelash

Eyelashes define your eyes and if they are straight or droopy and light in colour, your eyes look smaller and not-so-attractive. Dr Harshna Bijlani, aesthetic dermatologist says, Eyelash tinting and perming is a way to instantly enhance your eyes making them look bigger. The perming process curls your eyelashes and the tinting process makes them look darker. It gives the effect of wearing mascara but without the headache of applying and removing it daily.

Since this treatment enhances your own eyelashes, dependence on stick-on fake eyelashes is over. Experts say that these procedures can be done by anyone but are especially popular with brides and those attending special functions. Painless and comfortable, eyelash curling takes around an hour and the results last around three to six months. Adds Dr Nishita Sheth, aesthetic dermatologist, Youngsters in their 20s and women in 30s frequently come up for curling their eyelashes. It is a safe procedure if done by qualified and experienced dermatologists.

The procedure
Lashes are wrapped around the perm rod that is chosen as per your eyelid size and glued on to it. Choose the perfect size to make sure that the tips of the lashes don't touch your eyelid. Each lash hair should be wrapped straight on the rod. After this, the perm solution is applied on every single lash hair from the root to tip and allowed to sit for around 10 minutes. This is then rinsed off with a pad in the correct direction, post which the neutraliser is applied for another 10 minutes or more. Finally, the conditioner is applied to the lash hair. After this, a glue remover is used and lashes are rinsed with saline water. This is a highly professional procedure and if not done by qualified dermatologists could lead to permanent damage to your eyes.

Dos and don'ts when tinting
- Do not try to tint your eyelashes at home or in a parlour that uses hair dye. Normal hair dye is not meant to be used so close to the eye and incorrect usage can cause permanent eye damage and blindness.
- Cosmetologists use specially formulated eyelash tints that are safe and effective.
