Bangladesh condemns flag desecration at Kolkata mission

The government of Bangladesh on Friday (Nov 29) strongly condemned over incidents involving the desecration of the country's national flag and the burning of an effigy representing Chief Adviser Prof. Muhammad Yunus in Kolkata, India.

In this regard the Government of Bangladesh urged Indian authorities to take appropriate steps to prevent such occurrences in the future.

In its statement, the government reiterated its opposition to any form of violence and emphasized the importance of safeguarding the Deputy High Commission in Kolkata, along with other diplomatic missions and personnel, including both diplomats and staff members.

The Ministry of Foreign Affairs (MoFA) of Bangladesh noted the alarming nature of a demonstration held outside the Deputy High Commission on Thursday afternoon. Organized by a group identified as ‘Bongio Hindu Jagran,’ the protest reportedly escalated when participants breached barricades and advanced toward the mission's premises.

According to the MoFA statement, the protest involved acts such as burning the Bangladeshi national flag and an effigy symbolizing the Chief Adviser of the Bangladeshi government.

While the situation has since been brought under control, there remains a lingering sense of unease among the personnel at the Deputy High Commission.
