Mozena urges to stop violence

DHAKA: US Ambassador to Dhaka Dan W Mozena urged to stop undemocratic and unacceptable incidents in Bangladesh which are anti-democratic process.

The US diplomat made the plea in a written statement on Tuesday afternoon after a meeting with BNP Chairperson Khaleda Zia at her residence at Gulshan in the city.

“I underscored the ever more urgent need for the parties to engage in serious dialogue immediately to find an agreed way forward to free and fair elections that are credible in the eyes of Bangladeshi people,” he said.

Mozena said, “I also noted the US government concern at the recent wave of arrests of senior political leaders, given the intimidating effect that this has on those who wish to peacefully exercise their democratic rights and whose participation is critical for the success of future dialogue between the two sides.”  

Mozena also said a number of vital issues, including prevailing political deadlock, Supreme Court, Press Club, Dhaka University incidents on Sunday which are contrary to the democratic process were discussed in the meeting.
