Indefinite blockade underway

DHAKA: The indefinite nationwide blockade, called by BNP-led 18-party alliance, is underway across the country on Wednesday amid stray incidents of violence.

The opposition alliance is observing the rail-road-waterways blockade demanding cancellation of schedule of 10th general election and restoration of caretaker government system.

Blockade supporters torched a pickup van on Dhaka-Kapasia road in Rajendrapur rail line area of Garipur district at around 12:00am.

Besides, police held 10 people from various spots of the district.

The New Year has started amid indefinite blockade on roads, rail line, and waterways for in the absence of a consensus between the government and main opposition BNP.

Central and metropolitan BNP senior leaders were not seen in political ground after the arrest of some top leaders. Fearing arrest most of them went on hiding.

Wishing anonymity a member of BNP standing committee said that such type of behavior of central leaders especially Dhaka Metropolitan leaders is not acceptable.

Common people also expressed their aggravation for the sufferings due to the sixth spell of blockade.

On the other hand, law enforcers took position in front of Khaleda Zia’s Gulshan residence as usual.

Earlier, the alliance observed 15-day blockade in five spells from November 26 to November 28, from November 30 to December 5 and December 7 to December 12, from December 17 to December 19 and from December 21 to 24 last year.
