JCD leader killed in Satkhira

SATKHIRA: A union Chhatra Dal leader was killed in a gunfight between combined forces and terrorists in Islamkati union under Tala upazila of the district early Monday.

The deceased was identified as Azharul Sheikh, 28, president of Islamkati union Chhatra Dal and leader of ‘Azhar Bahini’, son of Sirajul Sarder, hailed from Ghona village of the upazila.

Confirming the matter, Officer-in-Charge (OC) of Tala Thana Sakhawat Hossain told banglanews that they nabbed Azhar on Sunday and after a daylong interrogation, they took him to his ‘Chingri gher (enclosed water body for shrimp culture)’ area to recover hidden arms.

During the time, combined force members opened fire as members of his gang opened fire aiming the law enforcers, leaving Azhar bullet-wound and three police personnel including OC sakhawat injured.

Law enforcers rushed him to Satkhira Sadar Hospital where on duty doctor declared him dead, he added.

Police recovered a pipe-gun and five unused bombs from the spot, he added.

OC sakhawat also said that at least there are 12 cases against Sakhawat with the thana on charge of attacking police, killing and raping women in 2001.
