Demonstrators from the Anti-Discrimination Student Movement gathered at Zero Point in Gulistan, the capital's Noor Hossain Square, chanting slogans against the "fascist Awami League."
According to the protesters, primarily students from various universities, the recently ousted Awami League (AL) must face trial for its alleged role in mass killings during the July-August protests.
The demonstration came in response to an announcement by the Awami League on its official Facebook page, calling for a rally in the same area at 3 pm to mark Noor Hossain Day.
Amid heightened security, Border Guard Bangladesh (BGB), police, and the Rapid Action Battalion (RAB) were deployed near the Awami League's central office and surrounding areas.
Law enforcement officers were seen detaining suspected AL members near the AL office, though the exact number of arrests could not be confirmed.
From the early morning, students began assembling at Zero Point, chanting slogans like "In my golden Bengal, there’s no place for fascism," and "We want justice!"
Despite the tense atmosphere, no violence has been reported as the protestors continued to call for justice and the end of what they describe as the growing fascist tendencies within the political landscape.
The protests marked the anniversary of Noor Hossain’s death in 1987, when the Jubo League activist was killed by police during a demonstration against the autocratic rule of President HM Ershad.
