Bangladesh seeks Interpol alert for Sheikh Hasina

The International Crimes Tribunal’s prosecution office has sent a request to Interpol, through the Inspector General of Police (IGP), to issue a red notice for the arrest of former Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina, who reportedly left the country amid a mass uprising.

Chief Prosecutor of the International Crimes Tribunal, Mohammad Tajul Islam, confirmed the matter on Tuesday (Nov 12).

Speaking to reporters at the tribunal premises, Tajul Islam said, “We recently requested Interpol to issue a red alert for Sheikh Hasina, an accused fugitive, currently outside Bangladesh.”

“Under international law, and using Interpol's available mechanisms, we requested her arrest due to pending arrest warrants against her for alleged crimes against humanity. Since she is beyond Bangladesh’s jurisdiction, we have requested Interpol to take necessary steps, including issuing a red alert,” he said.

When asked how the notice was sent, Tajul Islam explained, “The responsibility to communicate with Interpol falls on the IGP. We directly issued a formal request to Interpol.”

Earlier, on Sunday, the interim government’s Legal Adviser, Professor Dr. Asif Nazrul, stated that red notices would be issued through Interpol to capture fugitives. He made the statement after reviewing progress on ongoing renovations at the tribunal.
